I am going to discuss the above statement, "Satire must be contemporary", making reference to a contemporary comedian and other academic sources, to aid and support my exploration and discussion of the subject.

"Like polemichal rhetoric, it seeks to pursuade an audience that something or someone is reprehensible or ridiculous, unlike pure rhetoric, it engages in exaggeration and sort of fiction. But satire does not forsake the "Real World" entirely, it's victims come from that world, and it is this fact (together with a darker or sharper tone) that seperates satire from pure comedy. Finally, satire usually proceeds by means of clear reference to some moral standards or purposes." (Griffin D, 1994, p.1).

-Sacha Baron Cohen is an example of a contemporary commedian who uses exaggerated characters to create satire.

-Goldoni also used exaggerated characters, mainly based upon the relationships between servant and master.

-The relationship between servant and master is no longer as prevalent in today's society. As a contemporary audience we are still able to laugh at Goldoni as the characters are still relevant in today's society.

-Within our own exploration of the plays and through our devising process, we have chosen to take the subject of sexuality also themed in many Goldoni plays. We hope that by using a gender swap that we are able to satirise the conventional roles placed upon the sexes in current society.
